Prune back old foliage and apply fertilizer in early spring before new growth emerges.
History
This new Echinacea cultivar is part of the Evolution series, an exclusive set of seedling selections originating from Echinacea 'Cheyenne Spirit', which is a segregating mix protected under a breeding method claim in U.S. Pat. No. 7,982,110, characterized by single-type inflorescences having a wide range of flower colors and moderately vigorous, upright growth habit. The new cultivar 'Baleovoeen' was discovered as a whole plant and selected during June 2014 in a controlled environment in Dayton, Oregon. The new cultivar displayed a novel combination of characteristics including unique ray floret color and size, and compact-upright growth habit. In-vitro shoot propagation starting in April 2015 in Dayton, Oregon demonstrated that the new cultivar reproduces true to type, with all of its distinguishing characteristics retained through successive generations. U.S. Plant Patent #30,998 was issued in October 2019.
Lore
Echinacea purpurea, the parent of all contemporary hybrids is a native of the American prairie. Echinacea root was discovered by Native Americans within its range for healing properties. In recent years science has confirmed that the root contains chemicals that stimulate the immune system. Coneflowers are part of the American prairie plant communities and are a well documented bird habitat plant. The genus name Echinacea is derived from the Greek word (echino), meaning "spiny", due to the spiny central disk.
