Care Instructions
Provide well-drained soil. Follow a regular watering schedule the first growing season to develop a deep, extensive root system. Treat like a perennial in the north; cut back in winter or early spring. In warmer climates plants may require occasional moderate pruning to maintain the desired compact growth. Apply controlled-release fertilizer in spring.
History
This selection was derived from a summer 2005 hybridization of Buddleja 'Blue Chip' x 'Miss Molly'. 'Blue Chip' is a complex hybrid containing 3 different species and one botanical variety of Buddleja (B. davidii, B. davidii var. nanhoensis, B. lindleyana, and B. globosa. 'Miss Molly', the other parent of 'Lilac Chip', is a hybrid of 'Miss Ruby' x 'Attraction'. 'Miss Ruby' was derived from hybridization of 'White Ball' x 'Attraction'. 'Attraction' was derived as an open-pollinated seedling of 'Honeycomb', which is a hybrid of B. globosa x B. davidii. 'White Ball' is described as a complex hybrid by its developer, presumably containing B. davidii and B. fallowiana. The resulting new cultivar, 'Lilac Chip' has a compact growth habit and unique lilac flower color.
Lore
Due to it's non-seeding nature, this selection has been approved by the ODA for production, marketing, and landscape use in Oregon, making 'Lilac Chip' one of the few cultivars (along with 'Purple Haze', 'Blue Chip' and 'Ice Chip') available to growers and consumers in Oregon.
